The Mississippi State University Army ROTC awarded several scholarships and contracts to cadets last week at its 2003 Fall Awards ceremony. The ceremony also recognized the performances of some cadets over the summer break.
Second Lieutenant Kelly Van Veldhuizen said the scholarships and contracts mark an important step in becoming an officer in the U.S. Army.
Lt. Col. Mark McManigal, battalion commander, explained the different awards involving the scholarships and the training exercises that were presented at the event.
“The Army ROTC has four four-year scholarships and two two-year scholarships,” he said.
“Four of MSU’s cadets graduated from the Leaders Training Course at Fort Knox, 16 graduated from the National Advanced Leadership Camp, eight completed airborne school and one completed air assault school,” he added.
“We [the Army ROTC] have sent over 30 students for training this past summer,” said McManigal. “We are very selective where we send them. The focus is strictly on scholar, athletic and leadership roles.”
John and Pam Baranello attended the ceremony to see their son, Nicholas Baranello, receive his awards. Both parents said they were proud of their son’s efforts.
Nicholas received an award for graduating from the Leaders Training Course at Fort Knox over the summer as well a contract for completing the course.
