In his Nov. 14 article “Morality v. Evolution,” Michael Stewart makes the claim that “either morality is a false notion or we must look elsewhere than evolution for our source of light to make sense of who we are.”
This is a false notion. The opening quote he uses negates his whole argument. “Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution.” Morality is determined by our culture; it is not a part of biology. The study of morality should not be confused with the scientific study of living creatures.
Stewart also quotes Ravi Zacharias, asking “If DNA neither knows nor cares, what is it that prompts our knowing or caring?”
Whether you believe that the interactions of millions of biological molecules prompt this or you look for an explanation from a higher power does not mean that our views on murder or rape are “senseless moral judgments.”
Our morals help to protect us and help society function. However, their relation to biology is minimal.
Morals have a purpose in our society. However, their existence does not relate to the study of evolution.
