Mississippi State’s Pierre Browne won the 55-meter dash in Gainesville, Fla., at the Gator Invitational Sunday. Senior Dion Crabbe also had a good meet for the 19th-ranked Bulldogs, placing fifth in the 200-meter dash (21.72) and third in the long jump (24-4 1/2 feet). Browne (6.26) beat out Mississippi’s James Shelton to win the finals of the 55 meters in the O’Connell Center on the campus of the University of Florida.
The Bulldog throwers once again had a solid showing. Senior Tim Huddleston placed fifth in the shot put (51-9 3/4 feet) and sixth in the weight throw (57-7 3/4). Teammate Viktor Mara placed seventh in the weight throw with a toss of 57-4 3/4.
Junior college transfer Elmore McConnell had his best showing of the year, running the 800 meters in 1:53.49, placing fourth in the event.
On the women’s side in the 3000 meters, the Lady Bulldogs had another strong showing, with freshmen Meggan Hodge and Tiffany McWilliams finishing fifth (10:09.56) and sixth (10:10.50), respectively. Junior Christine Zawaski took eighth place with a 10:24.21 mark.
Coach Al Schmidt’s track teams will compete next at the SEC Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. on Feb. 23-24.
