The Mississippi State men’s golf team will open up spring play just outside the Houston city limits in Katy, Texas, at the Rice Intercollegiate Golf Tournament February 11-12. Tournament play begins with 36 holes on Monday with the final 18 holes to be played on Tuesday at the Greg Norman-designed Meadowbrook Farms Golf Course (7,100 yard, par 72).
With just three experienced players returning to the squad for the spring session, veteran Codie Mudd of Louisville, Ky., Juco-transfer Kellen Maurer of Parkdale, Ore., and freshman Joe Deraney of Statesboro, Ga., MSU coach Greg Martin will look for untested but talented newcomers to help carry the squad.
Making their collegiate debuts for the Maroon and White are Tim Satow and Craig Horrocks, both of Durban, South Africa, and Ballinasloe, Ireland-native Eoin Bartow.
All three players, acquired after the fall season, are classified as freshmen. Martin will insert Mudd, Maurer, Deraney, Satow and Horrocks into the starting rotation for the Rice Intercollegiate Tournament. Bartow will travel with the team and compete as an individualist in the tournament.
The field includes two other Southeastern Conference schools, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Host-Rice, Air Force, Baylor, Kansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Missouri, North Texas, Southwest Texas State and UC-Davis round out the tournament field.
