It is Super Bulldog Weekend, and I’ve received many phone calls from recent alumni who need a place to crash. Have you? The out-of-towners are coming. It’s nice to have them in Starkuquerque because it lets me see just what it is that I’m striving for-a big, super bad, maroon Winnebago with “Bully Bus” airbrushed down the side. I can see it now. Not only do the out-of-towners bring an interesting array of RVs and RV accessories, but they also bring some serious school spirit. I love it. These folks don’t live around here, so they never seem to get tired of this place. It’s almost as though they think we walk to and from class hollering, “Hold on, wait a minute, gotta put some Dawg in it!”
Starkadelphia is the mecca of northeast Mississippi, and Scott Field and Dudy Noble are the temples. Folks come from everywhere, and if they didn’t love Mississippi State so much, they’d probably be a bit inconvenient to have around. But the fact that they actually bleed maroon and white (because they ate paint chips off the walls of The Hump) is pretty cool. There’s nothing like school enthusiasm-it can really bring folks together.
The students at Ole Miss are bound together by the Hotty Toddy cheer. That thing makes me sick to my stomach, and if I never hear it again, it will be too soon. I absolutely despise it, and I think the folks in the RVs will agree with me on this one. Mississippi State needs its own unique cheer. “Who let the dogs out?” just isn’t going to cut it. We need something with a little more percipience, but nothing too haughty, nothing that would make you feel like a snob if you were to belch it out at a football game.
Of course, I wouldn’t be writing this piece if I had not already thought of such a cheer. I actually came up with this cheer my sophomore year. I claim it as my own, and when I bellow it at sporting events, bars or shopping malls, it is well received by most people. It mocks the Hotty Toddy cheer by following the exact same cadence but includes some MSU favorites: cowbells and Copenhagen. And it goes like this:
Are you ready?
Hell yeah.
Damn right.
Cow Tippin’.
“Cope” Dippin’.
Cowbell!
If you go to Ole Miss,
You go to hell.
I think we should all come together and decide on a school cheer-one that’s better than that Hotty Toddy mess. We need a cheer that shows everybody what we’re about. Maybe it should be about RVs.
I’m glad all you out-of-towners are here, but I’m sorry, I only have two couches, and they’ve both been claimed. Have a great weekend, and go to hell Ole Miss.
